My Book

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

I take particular pride in announcing the release of my book on the history of Mercedes and the old days in the barrio: Mercedes. Recuerdos de Ayer. It gives a history of Mercedes, which is located in South Texas by the Rio Grande, through the eyes of a member of a pioneer family, the Gutierrez’s, our maternal grandparents.

Lorenzo Gutierrez arrived in Mercedes in 1911, with his wife and 8 year old daughter, my mother, fleeing a civil war in Mexico during a lull in the Mexican Revolution of 1910, four years after the incorporation of Mercedes in September 1907 .

The book was compiled from editorials written in 2000 and 2001, to coincide with the celebration of the Centennial, 1907-2007. It is an elegant local history book in English with some phrases in Spanish, immediately followed by the English translation. It includes photos and historical background of the growth and development of the city. You get a sense of life among los de abajo, those at the bottom of the economic latter, the very poor in the barrio.

This is a limited edition. No other reprints are envisioned. A large number of families will be deprived of owning a copy if the current rate of demand continues.

If you want to ensure that there is a copy of this keepsake reserved for you and your family, please contact G. G. Garcia by e-mail at prairieyaqui@yahoo.com, or send your check in the amount of $30.00, which includes sales tax, shipping and handling, to the following address:
